The values below are Flood's fingerprints and the air we breathe. They are also in order of priority. For example, we would never exercise Creativity at the expense of Grace & Truth. NOTE: These are values that make Flood unique. Therefore, we do not list the essentials that every church should believe and practice. The amended BGC Affirmation of Faith represents our views and can be downloaded here (PDF).
GRACE & TRUTH
Psalm 19; Acts 17; Romans 1 & 2; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16, 17; 2 Peter. 1:20-21
+ All truth is God's truth (we live in a God-drenched universe).
+ God's Word is the authority of our lives and is relevant for today.
+ Truth is transformational--it is not just head knowledge (informational).
+ Wisdom is the ability to apply our biblical knowledge to real life situations.
WHOLENESS
Psalm 139; Isaiah 61; Luke 4:14-20; Acts 2, 17:27-28; Colossians 3:17, 23; Revelation 4:11
+ Our aim is to reflect the character and priorities of Jesus Christ. Personal holiness means our life choices are congruent with our faith--lifestyle and relational integrity
("we practice what we preach").
+ We are on a journey of self-awareness, actively involved in our own healing. "To know self is to know God; to know God is to know self" (Calvin).
+ Our faith is holistic: we include our bodies, minds, souls, and strength in our Christian spirituality.
+ Community is essential to spiritual growth.
GENEROSITY
Genesis 12 (Blessed to be a blessing); Luke 6 ( "it is more blessed to give than to receive"); Romans 12:1-2
+ We serve others with our time, gifts, and financial resources as a response to God's grace. Flood seeks to empower people through volunteer leadership.
+ We exist to bring people where they need to be, not simply to meet felt needs (we come to give, in response to God's mercy, before we get).
+ Mission is why the church exists. The entire church is involved in bringing people to the transformational love and power of the Living God. We are all "sent" as missionaries.
+ Spiritual reproduction is the natural result of one who is grateful and being transformed.
INCLUSIVITY
Matthew 22:1-14; Luke 10: 25-37; Luke 15; Luke 19:10; John 4
+ The church is a refuge for the world not a refuge from the world. All are welcome because of God's grace.
+ We respect faith perspectives/traditions different than our own.
+ "In the essentials unity, in the non-essentials liberty, in all things charity" (Augustine).
+ Strength/gift-based leadership regardless of age, race, gender.
CREATIVITY
Genesis 1 & 2 (1:26-29 - "image-bearers"); Jesus teaching through parables; Acts (see esp. ch. 17)
+ We value unique approaches to contextualizing the Gospel—translating truth for today. This means that we engage culture--the Gospel is meant for the marketplace.
+ Structure submits to Spirit.
+ We value the arts--reflecting God as re-creators.
+ We value joy and humor.
