Friday’s Beans and Rice Prayer Requests

Friday, May 1st, 2009

It’s May Day!

Today we will continue to pray for Shine Day, happening Saturday, May 2nd, from 9am – 3pm. It is going to be an exciting outreach to the Linda Vista community and a great dialogue to have with our Lord about. Please consider taking a RISK by asking the Lord how you can make an impact within this event. Here are more specified requests concerning Shine Day:

For the Medical Fair:

  • *Pray for the doctors, nurses, and other health professionals. Pray that God gives them wisdom & compassion as they serve at Shine Day.
  • *Pray that God brings the right people there – people who are in genuine need of health education & resources.
  • *A prayer of thanks. Express thanks to God for placing capable men & women with skills in health & medicine at Flood, and for this unique opportunity to meet a very real need in the community.

For unique outreach opportunities:

  • *Pray that God uses this event to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the Linda Vista community.
  • *Pray that we are able to make lasting connections with the residents of Linda Vista, and the other organizations that serve this community.
  • * Make the hearts of the people in the community receptive and open to God’s love.
  • *Ask that the Holy Spirit works in us to express God’s love in our actions and our words.
  • *Pray that God creates unique opportunities for us to share the Gospel with words.
  • *May we be flexible, giving God the freedom to work in us and through us; may we also receive His boldness to take intentional RISKS.

Let us pray for rejoicing hearts of service on Shine Day. Here is a reflecting passage:

“Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:43-45

Thursday’s Beans and Rice Prayer Requests

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Hey everyone,

Today we will be focusing our prayers towards Shine Day taking place this Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. We will specifically be prayerful about Kearny High School and the Linda Vista community and how our church can make an impact there through this event. Here are some of those detailed prayer requests:

For the events of Shine Day:

  • *For the last minute details of planning, supplies and setup. Pray that things fall into place, to facilitate a day of joyful, effective service.
  • *For the volunteers. Pray that volunteers are led to serve where they will be most effective, and that God gives us physical and mental energy and stamina, to serve sacrificially. For those participating in the beans and rice fast, pray that God provides us with the nourishment we need to arrive physically strong and ready to serve!

For Kearny High School

  • *For the work projects at Kearny High School. Pray that we are able to complete each project we take on. Pray that we are able to accomplish even more than we planned or expected.
  • *A prayer of thanks. Let’s express thanks to God for placing us at Kearny High School, and the amazing opportunities He has opened up for us to bless KHS, and to be blessed by them.
  • *Pray that we are able to raise enough funds through the rummage sale to bless Kearny HS, offering help with the urgent needs they are experiencing in this challenging economic time.

For the Linda Vista Community

  • *For the last minute details of planning and supplies. Pray that all of the supplies and skilled workers that we need to accomplish our work projects are present on Saturday, so that we are able to bless the residents of Linda Vista by meeting their tangible, practical needs.
  • *A prayer of thanks. For the first time, we have work projects at residents’ homes, and at local community centers! Let’s express thanks to God for this AMAZING opportunity to connect directly with the Linda Vista community in a meaningful way.

May you consider this passage as we come together as a church to pray and serve for Shine Day.

“…Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” Titus 2:14 (emphasis added)

The LORD is a shelter for the oppressed,

Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, O LORD, do not abandon those who search for you.”
  –Psalm 9:8-10

Tuesday’s Beans and Rice Prayer Requests

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Hey Everyone!
In continuing our second day of prayer and fasting, we are going to be focusing on the local homeless ministry Flood Love. Here are some specific needs for prayer:

  • Please pray that those with addictions would be able to drop their addictions. That they would not just quit drinking or doing drugs, but would gain a relationship with the Living God who can sustain them in their greatest times of need.  Also that they would clean up their lives with the help of the Holy Spirit. Pray that they would be addicted to God.
  • For safety for the homeless as they sleep at night. Pray that they would be in community with those around them, watching each other’s backs like family, and for the hearts of those who would cause them trouble to be softened to act out of Love.
  • For spiritual healing for those questioning “why me?”.  That their wounds would heal, inside and out and that they would receive the bread of life and trust God will provide the next meal, knowing that man does not survive on bread alone.
  • For those with the ability to work to have the motivation to work. Also for those with the drive to work to be given the ability to work and that God opens doors for them to work.  Pray that if given the opportunity, they would treat it responsibly.
  • Please pray that God would speak to you about what you can do to help someone in need.  Please ask that He would reveal to you what you have been given in excess so that you may share it with someone lacking.

Here is a passage to reflect on while in prayer: Matthew 25:31-40.

Monday’s Beans and Rice Prayer Requests

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Hey Flood Family!

In beginning this week of identifying with the poor through fasting, we would also love for you to participate in prayer throughout the week. Today, we are going to be focusing within two areas of ministry: Flood Malawi and COTN Uganda. Here are some specific requests:

Flood Malawi:

  • * For an upcoming Evangelism Conference happening June 18-20, that the church would be excited to share their faith with friends, neighbors and loved ones
  • *For the continued health and growth of the new church, Flood Malawi
  • *For leaders within Flood Malawi church to be strengthened and equipped to be sent out for God’s mission

COTN-Uganda:

  • *For the construction plan, and progress which is the major issue at hand now. For God’s guidance, providence, site planning, etc.
  • *Teams coming over this summer to enjoy the Lord’s goodness in the cultural context, and to be able to impact, and bless the locals.
  •  *For the Lord’s hand upon the COTN President, and entire leadership, for guidance, and good health.
  •  *For Flood’s team going to Uganda. May they go with courage and humility with their hearts focused on being servants.  That they would go to support all of the COTN staff of Uganda in ways that amplifies their job and the work that God is doing there.
  •  *Against Child Sacrifice in Uganda, which has been very rampant.

And as an encouragement, may you take heart in this passage as you begin your week of faithful prayer.

“Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to you while you may be found; surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not reach him.” -Psalm 32:4

We Stand
For most Americans, nourishment is easy. We go to the grocery store, head to a restaurant, or drive past a window where prepared food is handed to us in a matter of seconds. We turn on a faucet, and clean water flows instantly into our homes. We are an exception.More than 1.1 billion people don’t have access to clean water. In many parts of the world, women and children carry 40-pound jugs for miles to retrieve their daily allotment—and even then, the water may not be safe to drink. It’s a critical situation. Every five seconds, a child dies from hunger-related causes. Every fifteen seconds, a child dies from water-related diseases. And with the global economic slide, another 100 million people have slipped into extreme poverty.

Take the 6-Day Challenge
As an act of solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the globe, we encourage you to eat for six days, Monday, April 27 – Saturday, May 2, as the bottom economic half of the world does every day. Eat the three meals of your day using only the options below. Set aside the money you would have spent on additional groceries, and donate it to Flood’s Impact Fund on Sunday, May 3rd, which will directly care for those in need both locally and globally in Malawi and Uganda.

Meal Options
Plain oatmeal or Cream of Wheat, a tortilla, rice, beans, rice with bits of fish or chicken, and a vegetable, with tap water.

Food Portions
Portion sizes around the world are much smaller than a typical American meal. One cup or eight ounces is a generous portion. Meat is a luxury, with the average African consuming about ¾ ounce per day—the size of a small chicken nugget. Fresh fruit is rare, available only if locally grown and in season. While these meals seem small by American standards, they actually represent diets in the broad middle when compared to the rest of the world. Half the world’s population lives on no more than $2 a day. Approximately 1 billion people live on even less—only $1 per day.

Water
Public water systems in the United States generally provide adequate, accessible, clean water for the common good in environmentally sustainable ways. Choosing to drink bottled water when there is a safe and convenient public source nearby can be both financially wasteful and harmful to the environment. Please avoid such options during the challenge, as they are not readily available for the people we are standing with. Drink water from the tap and remember the more than 1.1 billion people who don’t have access to clean water.

Doctor’s Recommendations
Please use your discernment in determining portion size and water consumption that will allow you to function in a safe manner while also experiencing what life is like for the other half of the world. If you have a medical condition, honor your physician’s recommendations. Contact your doctor if you are unsure about participating in this challenge.

Involving Your Kids
Beyond standing with others against global hunger and thirst, the 6-Day Challenge is also an experiential opportunity for you to form compassion in your family: seeing a need and doing something about it. Throughout this challenge, use discernment with your children. Be wise with dietary limitations, and encourage honest conversation about how each person feels. Those discussions will be key in opening your family’s eyes to the needs of others. If you have school-aged kids who are participating in the challenge, help them determine how to explain global hunger and thirst to friends who ask about the rice and beans they eat. Set aside time each day to talk about the experience, and to pray for families around the globe who face hunger and thirst every day of their lives.
