Pacific Beach Cleanup

Dear San Diegans,

I hope you’re well.

As you may know, Disney is giving away a free Disneyland pass to each person who volunteers for one of our beach cleanups. We have three more events remaining. They will be on March 13, April 10 and May 1.

New volunteers can click http://jcsm.org/pbcleanup/register/ to register. Please hurry because they could hit 1 million free tickets and stop accepting new registrations at any time. Please spread the word to your friends, family, co-workers and students.

Thanks for caring about our coastline! Our February 27 cleanup was a success with 633 people helping to clean Pacific Beach! We hope to get that many people or more for our other events. Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,
Jason Gastrich

Lead into the Darkness

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

“God I am lost and confused and I do not know where you are in my life. I cannot feel you like I used to and I feel as if you have turned your face from me!”

This is a common prayer for people who feel distant from God. This is the type of prayer that is resonated through Psalm 88, and this is the type of prayer that St. John of the Cross wrote extensively about. This feeling of distance and isolation was one that was very familiar to him as he faithfully served God even in the midst of his own great spiritual darkness which he calls “the dark night of the soul.” The perspective he brings however is significantly different than what we might expect. He defines the dark night of the soul as a time when God desires for us to grow deeper. He writes that “The ‘dark night’ is when those persons loose all the pleasure they once experienced in their devotional life. This happens because God wants to purify them and move them onto greater heights.” Interesting.

Is he trying to say that God at times will intentionally bring us into times where we feel distant and separated from Him? Yes, but it is for our own good. It is for a greater purpose that we probably do not understand at that point, and most importantly, it is out of His great love for us!

Later on in the his book, he writes that:

[God’s] love for us is not content to leave us in our weakness and for this reason He takes us into a dark night. He weans us from the pleasures by giving us dry times and inward darkness…Through the dark night pride becomes humility, greed becomes simplicity, wrath becomes contentment, luxury becomes peace, gluttony becomes moderation, envy becomes joy, and sloth becomes strength. No soul will ever grow deep in the spiritual life unless God works passively in that soul by means of the dark night.

These times of darkness and distance can very well be gifts of God presented to us for our own growth. God has not left us there, He has brought us there. There is some way in which He desires for us to grow in order for us to truly experience Him in a more complete way. God’s joy is not for us to be stagnant in our faith, but to come to a deeper lasting knowledge of who He is and how He desires our lives to be played out.

This is why we must hold onto the truth of Christ and the recognition that God is the “God of my salvation” as Psalm 88 is keen to point out to us. This psalm does not end in hope, but that does not mean that hope does not exist. We must cry out to God openly and honestly as we trust that as He has brought us into these times, He will be faithful to lead us out again. He has our best interests in mind. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Great opportunity to live in Normal Heights!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Well hello there! My name is Emily and I have the second bedroom in a two bedroom/1 bath apartment for rent. The current lease ends June 30, 2010 and I am looking for someone to commit until then. The apartment is in Normal Heights on Adams Avenue and in walking distance of Vons, Rite Aid, a beautiful park, Kensington Public library and many coffee shops and restaurants. It is located in a nice, quiet neighborhood perfect for walking and jogging. Additionally the aparment is near the #11 Bus route which is an enjoyable 15 minutes trip to San Diego State University! There is a laundry room on site as well as plentiful street parking.

The living room, kitchen and dining area are furnished; however, you will need to provide all bedroom furniture. The room available gets lots of natural sunlight and has a spacious walk in closet. Rent is $550 a month plus utilities.

As for myself I am a SDSU Alum and work full time in Mission Valley. I enjoy spending time with friends, being involved with my church, going on walks in my neighborhood and reading. I also love exploring San Diego and am slowly learning how to cook!

Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions! My email is emilymmyer@gmail.com

Room for Rent – Scripps Ranch

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I have one room for rent at my home in Scripps Ranch.  It’s a pretty nice house in a safe neighborhood.  The room is $700.  All utilities (water, dish network, internet, electric) are included in the rent amount.  The house is 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathrooms, 4 years old, and fully furnished.  The kitchen is pretty big for those of you who like to cook, and the backyard has a fireplace and built in BBQ if you enjoy entertaining outdoors.  I have 2 english bulldogs (which is already plenty), so no more pets permitted.  There is plenty of storage in the garage.  I generally have a house cleaner come every 6-8 weeks.

I’m looking for a roommate who is a guy, even tempered, very tidy (especially in the common areas), and repectful of my home.  I’d prefer people who are somewhere between bible thumpers and party animals.  I don’t want either of those extremes :)

Please contact me if you have additional questions or would like to see the property.

Thanks, Brent
